Andreas Kalyvas, “Democracy and the Poor: Prolegomena to a Radical Theory of Democracy”

Andreas Kalyvas is an editor of Constellations: An International Journal of Critical and Democratic Theory and Associate Professor in the Department of Politics at The New School for Social Research. Professor Kalyvas’s work focuses on democratic theory and the history of political thought from ancient Greek and Roman to modern and contemporary continental political theory.

The lecture puts forward the hypothesis of democracy as the politics of the poor in an attempt to radically rethink the democratic experience beyond its liberal-oligarchic appropriations and to capture its political singularity and defining traits. Democracy as political form is the constituted order of the emancipated poor, and democracy as political practice is the struggle of the poor to constitute their common life as a free and equal, that is, autonomous, life.
